How to Write an Authorship Statement

We understand that authors may fear that their work will not be properly recognized if they form a group, but this is unfounded. Medline Guidance can manage group authorship while giving due credit to each individual: Many journals ask for an explanation that mentions the individual contributions of authors in a multi-author article. While some journals provide a form or template for this purpose, others leave it open to authors. You can search online for a contribution template provided by another journal. This gives you a pretty good idea of what to cover. Here is such a template that you can consult. • As contributors in the Medline/PubMed dataset of the article; • As authors in a group author statement at the end of the article on thebmj.com; and • As a contributor to the contribution statement at the end of the article on thebmj.com. Based on the ICMJE guidelines for author criteria, you need to clarify how each author contributed to the article. You need to create a list in which a person`s name is assigned to the following roles or tasks: Contribution and guarantee are concepts that were first applied to the original research and are sometimes difficult to define for other articles.

Each contribution statement must clearly state who contributed what to the planning, execution and reporting of the work described in the article, and must identify one or, occasionally, several contributors as guarantors responsible for the overall content. For BMJ articles that do not report original research – such as editorials, clinical journals, education and debate – please indicate who came up with the idea for the article, who did the literature search, who wrote the article and who is the guarantor (the contributor who assumes full responsibility for the finished article had access to all the data, and controlled the decision to publish). For non-research related articles that include case reports such as weekly lessons, drug updates, and interactive case reports, please also indicate who identified and/or managed the case(s). The people doing the work are responsible for determining who meets these criteria and should ideally do so when planning the work and make changes as needed as the work progresses. The corresponding author assumes primary responsibility for communication with the journal during manuscript submission, peer review and the publication process, and generally ensures that all administrative requirements of the journal, such as. B the provision of details on authorship, approval by the Ethics Committee, registration documentation for clinical trials and the collection of forms and declarations in case of conflicts of interest, are properly carried out, although these tasks may be delegated to one or more co-authors. Here is a research article in The BMJ with the authorship of the group, as it appeared on Medline, with all collaborators clearly listed as individuals: The International Committee of Medical Journal Publishers Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Works in Medical Journals (ICMJE Recommendations 2018) recommends that authorship be based on the following four criteria: Note that the names of all co-authors must be written for the last point. Once you have written the statement of contribution, make sure it is signed by all co-authors before submitting it to the journal. You will also find this e-book useful: a handy manual with templates for communicating with the CRediT Statements journal must be provided during the submission process and will appear above the confirmation section of the published article, as shown below. 2. What appeared in a statement of authorship at the end of the article: The BMJ requires that all individuals named as authors meet the four ICMJE criteria for authorship, and all those who meet all four criteria must be identified as authors. We only recognize natural persons as authors.

These authorship criteria are intended to reserve the status of author to those who deserve to be recognized and can assume responsibility for the work. The criteria are not intended to disqualify colleagues from authorship who otherwise meet the authorship criteria by denying them the opportunity to meet criterion #s 2 or 3. Therefore, all individuals who meet the first criterion should have the opportunity to participate in the review, draft and final approval of the manuscript. If a large group of multiple authors has done the work, the group should ideally decide who will be an author before the work begins and confirm who is an author before submitting the manuscript for publication. All members of the group designated as authors must meet the four authorship criteria, including approval of the final manuscript, and they must be able to assume public responsibility for the work and have full confidence in the accuracy and integrity of the work of the other authors in the group. They are also expected to complete conflict of interest disclosure forms as individuals. At BMJ, we want authors to assure us that all authors included in an article meet the authorship criteria. In addition, we want to be sure that there is no one else who meets the criteria but has not been accepted as an author.

The journal requires me to make a declaration of “author contribution” when I submit my work. However, the journal`s website does not provide any template or guidance on how to do this. What must I do? How can I ensure that the author`s contribution statement I created complies with the necessary guidelines? If there are a very large number of authors, we can ask for confirmation that all the people listed have met the ICMJE criteria for authorship. Once they have done so, we can ask the authors to form a group whose name appears in the signature of the article. An example of an author contribution statement that uses CRediT with the degree of contribution: Journals that prescribe CRediT (Taxonomy of Contributor Roles) allow authors to provide information about the submission, allowing for detailed information about individual contributions to the work. If this information is not provided at the time of submission, it may be provided at later stages of revision supported by the Editorial Board. The submitting author is responsible for ensuring that the contributions of all authors are correct. All authors are expected to have reviewed, discussed and accepted their individual contributions as shared by the submitting author. The authors` statement of contribution will be published with the final article and should accurately reflect the contributions to the work. CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) was introduced with the aim of recognizing individual authors` contributions, reducing disputes between authors, and facilitating collaboration. The idea was born after a joint workshop in 2012 led by Harvard University and the Wellcome Trust with contributions from researchers, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and publishers, including Elsevier, represented by Cell Press.

Preparation, preparation and/or presentation of published works by individuals in the original research group, in particular a critical review, commentary or revision – including the pre- or post-publication phases.
