California Law Enforcement Agency Codes
The sheriff is the county`s highest law enforcement official. The position of sheriff is established by the California Constitution (Article XI, Section 1, Subdivision (b)) and by a law (Section 24000 of the Government Code). In 1997, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department, which was responsible for policing for much of Los Angeles County`s public transportation, was dissolved and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority was assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff`s Department. Of the more than 300 police officers who worked for the MTA, 60 percent were later absorbed by the LAPD and the rest by the Sheriff`s Department. .
